Shiatsu is an ancient Oriental
form of bodywork. It can be traced as far back as 3000 B.C. through the discovery of
meridian dolls which were unearthed from Chinese tombs.
Shiatsu is a Japanese term combining the word for finger,
"shi", and pressure, "atsu". This finger pressure, which also includes
the use of thumbs, palms, forearms, knees, or feet, is applied to specific points along
the energetic channels of the body known as meridians. Treatment can balance the body and
stimulate its innate ability to heal itself.
A Shiatsu treatment differs in several ways
from a typical massage therapy treatment. Traditionally, the session is done on a mat, on
the floor. The pressure is applied through the clothing, so it is important to wear
something loose-fitting and comfortable. No oils or lotions are used.
Hot /Cold Stone Therapy
The use of hot stones during a massage promotes a deep level of
relaxation. The stones are placed on the body over a towel and integrated into the massage while held in the therapist's hands.
Cold stones are especially good for the treatment of headaches, sinus
pressure, and on areas where there is inflammation or swelling.
Prenatal Massage
Prenatal massage can
help relieve the normal discomforts of pregnancy and childbirth. It can
also help flush the fluids that often cause pressure and discomfort in
the legs.
